Students write in response to reading within the reading program. New writing units provide opportunities for students to write using mentor texts.
In the Read Side by Side Reading Program, students use writing to monitor and synthesize their understanding of the text. Students will write short writing pieces in response to their reading.
Writing prompts include:
- Retell summaries that summarize a small portion of text,
- Synthesis summaries that summarize the full text and attend to thematic thinking,
- Turning point summaries arguing the central message of the text,
- Compare & contrast writing,
- Cause & effect writing,
- Problem, solution & opinion writing.
Students are guided in how to organize these expository pieces of writing and use transition words.Visit the writing page to download the writing frames! 🖨️ Suggestions for formal writing at the end of each read-aloud unit are also provided.
New! Writing Units
Narrative and expository writing units help students draft, revise, edit, and publish their own writing. To teach the units, you will need a 30 minute writing block, 2-4 days a week.
Plans are in development to add spelling and grammar lessons!
