Throughout the program, students are taught to read like detectives. They break the reading into four quadrants, and read using the CIA (Collect-Interpret-Apply) approach. This method aligns to the standards as students move from thinking about Key Ideas & Details (Standards 1-3), to Craft & Structure (Standards 4-6), and finally the Integration of Knowledge (Standards 7-9).
The CIA Approach | Alignment to Standards |
Collect Critical Information in Quadrant 1 | Key Ideas & Details (Standards 1-3) |
Interpret the Text in Quadrants 2 & 3 | Craft & Structure (Standards 4-6) |
Apply the Text to Life in Quadrant 4 | Integration of Knowledge (Standards 7-9) |
Titles are leveled according to the qualitative level, quantitative level, and task demand.
- Qualitative: genre, topics, themes, and vocabulary.
- Quantitative: Lexile level (as recommended by the CCSS).
- Task Demand: page count, and rigor of assignments.
