Reading and writing are integrated!
Students write for the purpose of monitoring their comprehension, synthesizing their understanding, and extending and sharing their thinking. Students practice both on-demand and process writing.
✏️On-Demand Writing
Students will write short writing pieces in response to their reading.
Writing prompts include:
- Retell summaries that summarize a small portion of text,
- Synthesis summaries that summarize the full text and attend to thematic thinking,
- Turning point summaries arguing the central message of the text,
- Compare & contrast writing,
- Cause & effect writing,
- Problem, solution & opinion writing.
Students are guided in how to organize these expository pieces of writing and use transition words.
💻Process Writing Units
Students will write longer, more formal writing pieces and will use the read-aloud texts as mentor texts.
Writing modes include:
- Narrative Writing (personal narrative, realistic/mystery narrative, historical narrative, science fiction narrative),
- Expository/Research Writing,
- Persuasive Writing, and
- Argumentative Writing.
Students learn to plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their own writing.
