Part 1-3-1

In the Read Side by Side Reading Program, students will complete 36 chapter books before entering 7th grade!

⚛️What the Science of Reading Says:

  • "Miles on the page or reading itself" makes a difference in student's fluency and comprehension skill (Moats & Tolman, 2019, p. 305).
  • Children should be encouraged to read wider and more advanced reading materials as soon as possible (Dewitz & Jones, 2013).
  • Only through the volume of reading will students be exposed to enough text to build their vocabulary (McQuillin, 2019a, b).
  • Increasing students' volume of reading increases a student's success.

📖How books Are Selected:

  • Titles span a variety of genres.
  • Titles, topics, and characters capture the interest of reluctant readers.
  • Titles increase student's background knowledge in social studies topics.
  • Award winning novels introduce rich vocabulary and craft.
  • Series books and popular authors keep students reading beyond the school day.
  • Texts are selected for their length as well as the quantitative and qualitative demands, providing a staircase of complexity as students move across a year, and across the grades.
