What the science says: "Children should be encouraged into wider and more advanced reading material as soon as possible," (Dewitz & Jones, 2013).
This attention to the VOLUME of reading is what increases a student's success.
How books are selected for the program:
Titles span a variety of genres.
- Titles, topics, and characters capture the interest of reluctant readers.
- Titles increase student's background knowledge in social studies topics.
- Award winning novels introduce rich vocabulary and craft.
- Series books and popular authors keep students reading beyond the school day.
- Texts are selected for their length as well as the quantitative and qualitative demands, providing a staircase of complexity as students move across a year, and across the grades.
3-levels of differentiation is provided in the book clubs:




- Below grade level titles will be one grade-level below benchmark,
- On grade level titles will match the benchmark,
- Above grade level titles will be one grade level above the benchmark.
Titles are leveled according to the qualitative level, quantitative level, and task demand.
- Qualitative: genre, topics, themes, and vocabulary.
- Quantitative: Lexile level (as recommended by the CCSS).
- Task Demand: page count, and rigor of assignments.
