Here is a list of suggested items you may want to purchase to support your implementation of the program.
- If teachers decide to use chart paper to do their co-created charts (my preference) then they will need an easel and chart paper. Many teachers are now doing this via document camera/smart board.
- Pocket chart for vocabulary.
- Students will need a composition book for the read-aloud time. They can use one for the year.
- Small sticky notes for dividing books into the quadrants. I am picky. I like the durable ‘post-it tabs’ colored orange/green/pink. I cut them in half to make them stretch. Students leave them in the books. But honestly, you can just use whatever you have!
- 5th grade will need Post-it Flags when reading the books Holes and Chains. Consult the teacher’s guides for specific colors.
- If teachers want to mark their teacher copy of the book (directions are at the back of each unit guide) they will need 1-pack of clear, full sheet labels and 3 colors of highlighters (yellow, pink, orange).
- Videos I recommend purchasing on DVD. Classrooms can share:
3rd Grade: Veggie Tales - The story of Flibber-o-Loo (Unit 3.5)
4th Grade: National Geographic - Great Journey West (Unit 4.3)
5th Grade: PBS: Mill Times (Unit 5.4)
6th Grade: American Experience - Surviving the Dust Bowl (Unit 6.2)

- Optional extension magazine for high-students during units 4.3 & 5.3
Kids Discover Magazine: Lewis and Clark
Kids Discover Magazine: American Revolution

- I also like to have a “recipe box”, index cards, and index dividers for conferencing with students. See p. 150 of Raising the Standards.
