What the science says: "Transfer is the ability to extend what one has learned in one context to a new context," (Dewitz & Graves, 2014).
Part 1 Read-Aloud: Students follow along as the teacher models fluent reading of grade-level text. Students engage with the text through:
- reading along in their head,
- turning and talking,
- note-taking; and
- writing in response to reading.
Part 2 Book Clubs: Students are matched to a text that is below, on, or above-grade level. Students transfer the skills learned in the read-aloud to a text they are reading themselves. Book club texts are matched to the genre and topic of the read-aloud and students use background knowledge to interpret the text.
Part 3 Extended Reading: Each unit offers a classroom book box with 16-titles matching the genres, topics, themes, and authors introduced in the unit. Students self-select books for independent reading, and are eager to continue their learning!
